about us
Who We Are
We come from Eritrea, a country nestled in the Horn of Africa. Eritrea shares its borders with Sudan to the west, Ethiopia to the south, and Djibouti to the southeast. The Red Sea graces its eastern and northeastern boundaries.
Turning our attention to Eritrean migration to Australia, statistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2016 indicated a population of just over 4,300 individuals born in Eritrea who have made Australia their home. Within Australia, the Eritrean community is still in the process of establishing itself, characterized as an emerging and growing presence.
Delving into the experiences of Eritreans living in Australia reveals a captivating narrative. A study focused on the journeys of Eritrean professionals across diverse spheres of life in Melbourne and throughout the entire expanse of Australia showcases their commendable contributions to society.

Where We Are Now
Hume City Council serves as the governing body for the Hume City region in Victoria, Australia. This region stands out as one of the country’s rapidly evolving and culturally diverse communities, boasting a population of approximately 258,000 inhabitants, with a significant presence from the Eritrean community.
The roots of the city’s vibrant heritage trace back more than 40,000 years to the time when the Gunung-Willam-Balluk indigenous communities first inhabited the area.
In the present day, nearly 40 percent of Hume’s residents hail from overseas origins, representing 156 distinct nations and contributing to a rich linguistic tapestry of over 150 languages spoken within the community.
Hume’s landscape encompasses well-established neighborhoods like Broadmeadows, Tullamarine, and Gladstone Park in the southern sector, as well as burgeoning residential areas such as Craigieburn, Greenvale, Mickleham, Kalkallo, and Roxburgh Park in the northeast. Completing the urban mosaic is the Sunbury township in the northwest.
We would like to acknowledge the generous support of Hume City Council to fund our new website via the Council Grants program.
We also appreciate the wide range of services, events and support they provide for our community.
